All About AlcoholEdu
What is AlcoholEdu?
AlcoholEdu is a science-based, interactive online program that provides students with information on alcohol and its effects on the brain, body, and behavior. All incoming first-time, first-year students are expected to complete AlcoholEdu. The program matches course content to students based on what they already know about alcohol, whether and how much they drink and their gender. Whether students drink or not, AlcoholEdu is designed to encourage informed decision-making about alcohol use as well as providing information about responding to the drinking behavior of friends and peers. The program delivers content with a non-judgmental tone that supports drinkers in making their own plans for reducing the risk of harm associating with drinking while in college.
Why is MU introducing AlcoholEdu to campus in 2008?
This program is one of many efforts on our campus designed to encourage a healthy campus environment where everyone every can live, study, work and have fun safely. We believe that students are best able to meet their educational goals under these conditions. Campuses across the country have found AlcoholEdu useful in encouraging less risky drinking and preventing negative consequences of drinking such as decreased academic performance or blackout. AlcoholEdu will provide this year’s incoming class with a shared baseline of information and expectations about alcohol use.
If I don’t drink, do I still have to complete AlcoholEdu?
Yes. All incoming first-year students are expected to complete AlcoholEdu. Whether or not you drink, you will very likely encounter other students who drink or talk about drinking while at MU. The course provides information about coping with others’ drinking behavior as well as responding effectively in situations where others are at risk of alcohol-related harm (e.g. alcohol poisoning, potential drinking and driving). AlcoholEdu provides personalized pathways through the course. If you do not drink, the material you receive will provide specific information tailored to your choice.
When will I take AlcoholEdu?
Students will receive login information on July 28 via email and are expected to complete Part 1 of the course with a passing grade before the beginning of the fall semester. The deadline for completing Part 1 of AlcoholEdu is August 17, 2008. Forty-five days later, you will receive email instructions for completing Part 2.
How long does it take to complete AlcoholEdu?
The course has 2 parts. Part 1 takes 2-3 hours to complete and is best taken in separate sittings. Part 2 takes 15 minutes to complete. The course includes surveys, tests of knowledge, and chapters with information about:
- How expectations influence behavior
- How alcohol affects learning and memory
- How to recognize and respond to an alcohol-related emergency
- How the body and brain responds at various blood alcohol concentrations (BAC)
- How to reduce risk from drinking using various strategies
Are my responses in AlcoholEdu confidential?
Yes. No one has can view your responses to questions within the course. Responses will be recorded without names or email addresses. AlcoholEdu has been designed to protect student privacy. The only information that the University will have access to is whether you have logged-in to the course, whether you have completed the course, and your grade on the exam at the end of Part 1.
How will MU know if I have completed AlcoholEdu?
MU staff members are able to track students’ progress in the course through the AlcoholEdu program. You may be contacted by email about your progress in the course.
What if I do not pass the test at the end of the course?
