What have we been up to?
While SHAPE is all about education and promoting healthy decision-making, who says learning can’t be a blast? Whether we are working on programs, educational initiatives or hosting keynote speakers, we try to throw a little fun in the mix!

National HIV Testing Day, June 27th, 2007

National HIV Testing Day was started in 1995 by the National Association of People with AIDS for the purpose of promoting early diagnosis and HIV testing.

  • People between the ages of 13 and 24 account for 11 percent of new HIV/AIDS cases diagnosed from 2001 through 2004, with females accounting for 38% of these cases (CDC, 2005).
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American College Health Association (ACHA) estimate that 1 in 500 college students is HIV positive. This estimate is based on a blind study of 19 American universities (The New England Journal of Medicine, 1990, Vol. 323, p. 1538-41).
  • Factors placing college students at an increased risk for HIV include: peer pressure, a newfound autonomy, perceived negative stigma associated with STI (sexually transmitted infection) testing, and alcohol and drug use.

In an effort to reduce this risk, SHAPE in collaboration with Columbia's Rain, co-sponsored National HIV Testing Day at the Student Health Center. Many students turned out to receive free HIV testing and counseling. We anticipate co-sponsoring this event annually!

Sexual Responsibility Week, February 2007: “The Female O”!

As part of February’s Sexual Responsibility Week, SHAPE sponsored two sexual health educators from New York, Marshall Miller and Dorian Solot, to come and speak with students about how to enjoy their sexuality. Their program entitled, “The Female Orgasm” provided students an opportunity to dispel myths surrounding enjoyment of sexuality and created an open atmosphere for discussion which was very well received.

In particular, Marshall and Dorian explored female sexuality and ways for women to be more comfortable with their own pleasure and the skin they’re in!

World Aid’s Day, December 1 st, 2006

World Aid’s day is a day set aside internationally to commemorate those who have been affected by HIV/AIDS. It is designed to honor those who have died or been affected by AIDS, those with HIV/AIDS, their families, and loved ones. It is a day in which the world is encouraged to get tested, know their status, and to work collectively toward preventative efforts. SHAPE collaborated with Columbia’s RAIN to provide free Oral HIV testing. SHAPE also sponsored a film and discussion about HIV and AIDS entitled, “Live Positively: Know Your Status!”

Sexual Responsibility Week, September 2006

For Sexual Responsibility Week 2006, SHAPE took an empowerment approach by promoting the slogan, “You have a voice.” SHAPE sponsored a lunch bag seminar facilitated by a member of the Counseling Center Staff, participated in tabling at Brady Commons, and offered free oral HIV testing in collaboration with the Boone County Health Department.

Safe Spring Break March 2007

SHAPE collaborated with the Wellness Resource Center to offer students resource tools and education on how to have a safe, happy, and relaxing Spring Break! SHAPE members tabled in Brady at the WRC’s Safe Spring Break Fair, handed out safer sex packets, brochures, and information on locations for emergency care for the most frequented spring break hotspots for MU students.

Professional Development!

Once again, 2 SHAPE peers and the graduate assistant flew to Atlanta, Georgia for the National Bacchus and Gamma Health Education Conference in November of 2007.
