Greetings from Our Director |
Dear MU student, The Student Health Center (SHC) welcomes you to the University of Missouri! MU has many traditions that you will learn about over the next weeks and months. We would like you to know about the tradition of excellence in health care for students. The SHC is not just another clinic. It is a team of health professionals who specialize in problems unique to members of an academic community. We understand that school is your primary focus and we are sensitive to the stresses you face during the semester. Whether you are completely healthy or have a chronic medical condition, we know you expect to meet the academic and social demands of college life. We are here for you! You may have a personal doctor you trust in your hometown. At the SHC you can get to know a doctor or nurse practitioner as you have known your family doctor. Just ask for that provider each time you schedule an appointment. While you are living on campus we encourage you to learn how to make good self-care decisions on your own. National health statistics on college students show that many students continue to experience detrimental effects of problem drinking. There are increasing numbers of students who smoke as well as feel stressed and overwhelmed. Along with medical and psychological services, the SHC has health educators who coordinate with other campus programs to provide more information about these problems, including prevention strategies. Please take time to read on about “Frequently Asked Questions.” It includes the services we offer, what the Student Health Fee covers, how to make appointments, a description of our staff, and how confidentiality is honored. Look at the checklist for a quick reminder of important matters to handle before you arrive on campus this August. Talk to your parents about your medical insurance plan, HMO or PPO so you know how to arrange payment for services not covered by the Student Health Fee. Your health is a valuable resource only you can preserve. We can help you meet that challenge to assure your success at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Susan Even, M.D. |
