Eating nutritionally can be hard if
you're on a tight budget, but it can be done. Try some of these tips. Here’s a top ten list
of shopping on a budget:
- Make a list before you go shopping – you will know what you already
have and this will also avoid impulse buying.
- Look for specials in the newspaper ads for stores you shop.
- Look for coupons but they only save you money if this is what you are already
going to buy.
- Buy generic brands or store brands.
- Compare the costs of fresh, frozen and canned foods to see which is cheapest
at the time. This can be different depending on the season.
- Prevent food waste – buy only the amount that you will eat before the
food spoils.
- Look for bargains on day-old bread and bakery items.
- Buy regular rice, oatmeal and grits instead of the instant flavored type.
These are more nutritious and usually less expensive.
- Look for large bags of frozen vegetables- you can cook just the amount you
need and freeze the rest.
- Freeze leftovers to eat at a different time so leftovers don’t spoil.
