Fast Food and Eating Out

We all love good, greasy french fries every now and then. The key is "every now and then." Fast foods are usually loaded with excessive salt, fat and calories. However, you can make some healthful choices when dining out. Here are some tips:

Buzz words to watch for:

“Go for it” words “Proceed with caution” words
Steamed Fried
Broiled Stuffed
Grilled Braised
Poached Crispy
Garden-Fresh Breaded
Dressing on the side Cream Sauce
Clear Broth Cheese Sauce
In its own juice Alfredo Sauce
Roasted Au Gratin
Lite Buttery
Whole-grain Prime

When you look over the menu, ask these questions: Does (or will) this restaurant:

  • Take special food preparation requests?
  • Prepare foods without salt and MSG?
  • Serve dressings and sauces on the side?
  • Serve skim or 1% milk?
  • Trim visible fat from meat and remove the skin from poultry before cooking?
  • Broil, bake, steam or poach rather than fry foods?
  • Leave all butter, gravy or sauces off entrees and side dishes?
