See the Changes

Gary Upton, DO, is a college-health expert. With 15 years experience at the Health Center, he knows and understands the health concerns of 18-25 year olds.

BIG changes are coming, beginning July 1, 2017. The Student Health Center will begin charging for all
medical office visits.
We have already been charging for office procedures (eg. stitches, wart treatments), IV fluids, immunizations and orthopedic supplies).

We now have contracts with most major insurance networks, through University Physicians. Based on your specific health insurance coverage, we will collect copays and file insurance claims.

Your health fee will continue to cover the same behavioral health services that are currently covered:

  • behavioral health consultation during medical visits
  • initial assessment and treatment visits to psychologists, social workers and psychiatrists, if needed.
  • If more than four visits are needed, you will receive charges that may be filed to insurance.

Students without insurance will receive the care they need along with financial guidance.

What does this mean for you?

  • Your insurance card will be your best friend. Bring
it to every appointment or use your phone to capture
a photo of the card’s front and back. It contains the
    following important information:
    • co-pays
    • coverage if you need a specialist
    • phone contact for questions and billing address

  • Your pre-paid health fee, required when you take 7-credit hours or more, provides:
    • initial behavioral health assessment and initial treatment visits
    • classes, workshops and health coaching to learn coping skills and stress-reduction strategies
    • monitoring Mizzou immunization requirements and managing outbreaks, if and when they occur

Funding from the health fee and insurance supports our integrated health care delivery model (medical providers working side by side with behavioral health professionals using the same electronic records). This provides convenient, high-quality care with the same providers during your years at Mizzou.
